Parks was an important leader of the civil rights movement, and she remained active in the struggle for equality until her death in 2005. The boycott was a success, and it helped to pave the way for the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The Montgomery Bus Boycott began soon afterward, and it lasted for more than a year. That December, Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her bus seat. However, Colvin’s case was eventually dropped, and the Montgomery NAACP began to look for a new test case. She was arrested and convicted of violating the city’s segregation laws. In the fall of 1955, a young black man named Claudette Colvin refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger. In addition, they were often forced to stand or to sit in the back of the bus. For years, black passengers had been required to give up their seats to white passengers when the bus filled up.
In the early 1950s, Parks became involved in the campaign to end bus segregation in Montgomery. In the 1940s, Parks worked as a seamstress at a Montgomery department store, and she was active in the local chapter of the NAACP. A bright and ambitious young woman, she attended Alabama State University, where she studied mathematics and music. Parks was born in Tuskegee, Alabama, on February 4, 1913, to LeRoy and James McCauley. This simple act of defiance sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, one of the largest and most successful mass movements against racial segregation in U.S. On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks made history when she refused to give up her bus seat to a white passenger in Montgomery, Alabama.
